Where we are

Ispra is a village located in Lombardia, province of Varese, in Northern Italy. With about 5000 inhabitants, Ispra is situated on the eastern shore of Lake Maggiore, and offers lakeshore strolls as well as easy access by boat to other lake attractions. JRC- Ispra site is about 2 km from the village centre. The site is close to Milano, some 60 km south-east, and to Varese , 20 km north-east, while the Swiss border is approximately 30 km north. Leased to the JRC by the Italian Government, the Ispra site covers a fenced area of 167 hectares. The original beauty of the site, which was a former game preserve, has been maintained, with the many JRC buildings and installations set among pine, birch, oak and chestnut trees.

Arrival by plane

Milan has three international airports : Malpensa, Linate and Orio al Serio.
Malpensa Airport is located about 30 km from the JRC (around 30 minutes by car). A taxi ride is available from Malpensa to the JRC. The nearest train station i Gallarate.
Linate Airport is located about 95 km from the JRC (around 1 hour and 15 minutes by car). The nearest train station is Milano Centrale.

From Milano Centrale and Gallarate railway stations a train can be taken to Sesto Calende, where a taxi service is available.

Orio al Serio Airport is located about 105 km from JRC (around 1 hour and 30 minutes by car). The nearest train station is Bergamo, which is connected to the airport by ATB (about 10 minutes bus ride). In addition, a bus service to Milano Centrale and Milano Lambrate railway stations is available.

Arrival by car

From Milan: On the motorway, follow the signs for Autostrada Laghi (A8) to Gravellona Toce and Gallarate. Take the exit at Sesto Calende and follow the SS 394 towards Laveno - Luino. After about 7 km, turn left at the traffic light in Travedona-Monate and follow the signs CCR ISPRA towards Cadrezzate and Ispra. The road will take you directly to the JRC-Ispra entrance.
From Switzerland: Arriving from San Gottardo or San Benardino (CH), continue along the A2 and then the A9. A few km after Saronno, take the A8 towards Gallarate and Sesto Calende and continue as above.
